Professor Matthews is a Professor of Diabetes Medicine. He founded the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism and was its Chairman for ten years.
He is the Founding Director of the Oxford Health Alliance, which includes the Tseu Medical Institute – an organization dedicated to capacity building in lower-middle income countries. The fellowship programme builds bridges between Oxford and other centres in LMIC countries, fostering academic links and education. There are fellows in Brazil, Colombo, Sri Lanka, Greece, Kuwait, and Cameroon.
Professor Matthews is also an executive member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and is the Chairman of the grants committees of the Diabetes and Wellness Foundation and the UK Novo Nordisk Foundation. He is a member of the Advisory Boards of Novo Nordisk, Servier and Dasman Diabetes Institute (Kuwait)
Professor Matthews is the lead Medical Tutor at Harris Manchester college. He teaches graduate entry medical students, and is coordinator of the Robert Turner EASD Clinical Research Course. He teaches in Thessaloniki (and in other centres) on a regular basis.
Trials: Past co-investigator of the UKPDS trial, part of the ADVANCE-ON trial group, and currently the co-chair of the CANVAS and CANVAS-R trials of cangliflozin.
Mathematical modelling: Calculated and wrote the HOMA model of insulin resistance and beta-cell function, and recently published the interactive update (iHOMA). Published extensively on time-series analysis of pulsatile hormone secretion.
Guidelines: Chaired and convened the ADA/EASD group to write joint European and American guidelines on Type 2 diabetes. 2012 and 2015
Community interventions for health: Coordinator of the Community Interventions for Health programme, as part of the Oxford Health Alliance.
