Harris Manchester is unique amongst Oxford colleges in accepting only students who are aged 21 or over at the start of their course. There is no upper age limit. Though the majority of our students are in their early to mid twenties, we also regularly have students in their thirties to sixties and sometimes even in their seventies. This means that the atmosphere is very different (we’d say much nicer!) than most other undergraduate colleges where the majority of students have come straight from school, and are leaving home for the first time. All of our students have done something between school and university, so they all have a story to tell. In addition, many are from overseas, and the blend of life experience and cultural variety makes for a very interesting and diverse mix, and a vibrant and tolerant community.
Some of our students reading for an undergraduate degree already have a degree under their belt, but for most, it is their first time round. In Oxford terms, the College has a relatively small number of students, which makes for a warm and friendly atmosphere. It’s easy to get to know people, and to find your academic and social feet. Everyone at HMC is an individual, not a number!
