We were delighted to learn that HMC alumna Rosanne Bostock (1989, BA English) received the British Empire Medal (BEM) in September for services to the community in Oxford.
In 2007, Rosanne founded OxClean, an initiative backed by Oxford Civic Society, with the aim of making the city a cleaner and more welcoming environment. She started out by organising Spring Clean events – campaigns that saw local community groups come together to clear streets of litter. The scale of OxClean’s impact has grown over the years, with its volunteers now numbering well over hundred and its activities taking place throughout the year.
Rosanne was presented with her medal during an event held by the Oxfordshire Lieutenancy at Rycote Manor for representatives of voluntary organisations and businesses throughout the county. She was accompanied by two other members of OxClean with links to Oxford University: Ingrid Lunt, Professor Emeritus at Green Templeton College, and Hugo Brunner, an Honorary Fellow at Trinity College, who Rosanne credits with being instrumental in the organisation's success.
Rosanne commented: “It was a very positive and moving evening in the light of what is being done in the UK in voluntary work. The British Empire Medal recognises the work of the OxClean team and the hundreds of volunteers every year across Oxford who try to keep the beautiful city litter free. It is very much appreciated.”
