I wish to begin by thanking the generous donors who made my scholarship possible. When I first received the email to let me know that I had won the scholarship, in truth, I thought it was a scam. My incredulity was soon replaced by absolute joy and thanks. After I had secured my offer from the University, the dark cloud of “How are you going to fund this?” loomed overhead, sullying my acceptance onto my MSt. With the scholarship, all of that went away.
Your generosity helps to make me better at doing history. For example, in April I will be presenting at a conference in Philadelphia, USA, and do not have to worry about finding the money for my flights or accommodation. On this trip, I also plan to conduct archival research into the eighteenth-century missionaries that I study. As another example, every fortnight I go down to London for a research seminar where we discuss history and new connections are made between historians. I can afford the transport and dinner costs for this because of the scholarship.
I was pleased that the scholarship comes from HMC as it is a community that aligns with my research interests on gender in eighteenth-century missionary work. The large number of people here studying Theology or adjacent subjects has made for some interesting and fruitful conversations. The college’s rare book collections has also been useful to my research as I have been able to look at some sermons from the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts on which there is marginalia and signs of book ownership. Scholarships like mine nurture and are the backbone of scholarly communities like that at HMC.
