Four-year MEng in Engineering Science.

Number admitted: c. 3 per year

Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles in ways that benefit society. In practice, it is a highly interdisciplinary profession that encompass physical sciences, information sciences, mathematics, life sciences, manufacturing technology, environmental sciences, aerospace, biology, medicine, management, and business.  Engineering’s scope is as broad as its mandate: to maintain and improve the quality of life.  The attributes of the best engineers extend well beyond technical competence and include vision, imagination, strength of purpose, and social conscience.  The discipline is ideally suited to the College’s interdisciplinary environment and focus on the learned professions.

Approximately 165 students per year are admitted to read Engineering Science across 26 different Oxford colleges and Harris Manchester College typically offers three places a year to mature students. The Department of Engineering Science at Oxford is a unified department, covering all the major engineering disciplines.  We have a top level rating for teaching and an international reputation for research. Our aim is to provide professional training with a sound theoretical foundation and opportunity for hands-on training in both the laboratory and shop environment.

The Course

The course is subdivided into two main curricular sections. Years one and two focus on topics that we believe all engineering undergraduates student should study in order to establish a solid technical foundation.  The third and fourth years allow for specialization into one of six branches of engineering:

  • Biomedical
  • Chemical
  • Civil
  • Electrical
  • Information
  • Mechanical

You need not choose an area to specialize in until the end of year-2. Moreover, there are additional options, such as Management and Innovation, that provide real-life business skills in areas attractive to employers.  The course is highly innovative and includes a combination of university lectures, college tutorials, projects, practicals, design activities, and a major project in the fourth year that could cover topics ranging from design to original research in a supervisor’s laboratory.

How to Apply

The application process for a place on course begins nearly a year earlier than your intended year of entry. To be considered, you must apply via UCAS, and register and take the Physics Aptitude Test (PAT). If your application is successful, you will be offered an interview and will find out if you have been offered a place in early January the following year. Entry requirements are as follows:

  • A*A*A to include Mathematics and Physics,
  • The A*s must be in Mathematics, Physics or Further Mathematics if taken.
