Dr Marc Schulz will present the Harvard Study of Adult Development, which has investigated the roots of wellbeing in 1000s of individuals.
For the Upton Lecture 2026 Dr Marc Schulz will present findings from the Harvard Study of Adult Development, which has investigated the roots of wellbeing in thousands of individuals followed across the lifespan. Using life stories and research findings, Dr Schulz will share why the Harvard Study and additional studies point to relationships as a key foundation of the 'good life'. The importance of relationships is also a core idea in many ancient traditions. He will highlight some steps that individuals can take to improve the quality of their life.
Dr Marc Schulz is the author (along with Robert Waldinger) of the instant New York Times Bestseller, The Good Life: Lessons from the World’s Longest Scientific Study of Happiness (2023), which has been translated and published in over 45 languages around the world. Dr Schulz is the Associate Director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, an 88-year-old longitudinal study of human flourishing in two generations of individuals from over 700 families. He is also an award-winning Professor of Psychology who holds the Sue Kardas PhD 1971 Chair in Psychology at Bryn Mawr College and directs Bryn Mawr’s Data Science Program. He is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Wellbeing Research Centre at Harris Manchester College.
The Upton Lecture is named after Charles Barnes Upton, Professor of Philosophy at the College between 1875-1903. The lecture is held annually and alternates between philosophical and religious themes.
