HMC Fellow Matthew Weait, Professor of Law and Society at the University of Oxford and formerly the Director of the Department of Continuing Education, delivered a lecture on 12 November at the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, one of London’s four Inns of Court. Entitled “Smoke and Rivers: Pandemics, Law and Rights of Nature”, Professor Weait’s lecture explored how legal recognition in the form of the Rights of Nature movement could become a tool for minimising the risk of zoonotic disease.

The occasion for the evening was a celebration of Professor Weait’s tenure as Autumn Reader, a prestigious post at Middle Temple which provides support and guidance for the educational work of the Inn, in particular to its student membership.

Middle Temple commented: “Master Weait, we thank you so much for your enormous contribution to the Inn’s educational heritage, including introducing hundreds of students to the Treasurer to be Called to the Bar.”
