On Saturday 6 June a delegation of postgraduates travelled to the University of Cambridge with Tutor for Graduates Professor Rob Klassen to visit Harris Manchester’s sister college, Homerton, for the ninth annual joint Graduate Research Day.
The day saw 11 students drawn from both colleges present their research to their peers, with topics ranging from integrating media into the national curriculum to maritime archaeology.
Harris Manchester and Homerton share a key part of their history in the figure of Charles Wellbeloved, a Homerton alumnus who became the Harris Manchester Principal in 1803 and oversaw a period of notable development.
The link between the two colleges continues today, with each of the respective Principals elected as Honorary Fellows of the other institution.
In 2016, a further bond was established through the annual Graduate Research Day, with each college taking it in turns to host the event. The day provides members of the two postgraduate research communities with an opportunity to share their work with a friendly, interdisciplinary audience composed of their counterparts in the other college.
Harris Manchester MCR President Jay Mok commented: “I was thrilled to reconnect with our counterparts at our sister college Homerton and its MCR President Nadia Chu and Tutors for Graduates, Melanie Keene and Mary Boyle, who were very welcoming to us all. We look forward to hosting the tenth Postgraduate Graduate Research Day next year back at Harris Manchester.”
