Dr Robert Maloney

Robert K. Maloney, M.D. is a pioneering cataract and LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) surgeon who performed the first LASIK procedure in western North America. He has performed more than 70,000 eye surgeries and was named by his peers among America’s top ten vision-correction specialists. He holds 11 patents, has authored four books and more than 175 scientific publications, and has lectured worldwide. He co-founded RxSight, Inc, a lens implant developer, and served as principal investigator for twenty FDA clinical trials. A former Rhodes Scholar and summa cum laude Harvard mathematics graduate, he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Magdalen College. Robert taught at UCLA’s Stein Eye Institute and continues there as a Voluntary Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology. He retired from clinical practice in 2026 and remains active in education, research, and philanthropy.

First contact with HMC

I came to Harris Manchester as a participant in the inaugural group of the Oxford Next Horizons programme, and I remember that the welcome I received in the Porter's Lodge was so much warmer than any other Oxford college.

What do you hope to achieve as a Regent? 

I hope to help secure stable sources of funding that allow the College to thrive.
