"I’m a first year student, juggling childcare and caring responsibilities with my part-time DPhil in English Local History. I chose to apply to Harris Manchester because I wanted to attend a small, central college, and the idea of it being mature-student only appealed to me. Having done my undergraduate degree at Oxford I know how wonderful the collegiate experience can be, but as I don’t live near Oxford I was unsure whether I would feel part of the HMC community. Receiving the news, before I’d even begun my DPhil, that my sub fusc would be provided by a kind benefactor instantly made me feel welcome! The fact that support for students at HMC extends to all members of the college, whether they’re located within college or on the other side of the world, also helped to give me the confidence to stand for a position on the MCR Committee, to help give a voice to other living-out and part-time students.
Financial assistance provisions are vital in supporting students who might face additional challenges during their studies (such as childcare difficulties), and can help students on less traditional paths feel understood and supported. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to not only the benefactor who enabled the purchase of my sub fusc, but to all those generous individuals who provide financial assistance to HMC students. Please do not under-estimate the impact of your gift, both in making a financial difference to students and in helping them feel welcomed at HMC and part of this inclusive and supportive college."
