HMC Supernumerary Fellow and Tutor for Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Dr Hana Navratilova delivered a lecture in Cairo on 23 September to commemorate the centenary of celebrated Egyptologist Jaroslav Černý’s first visit to the country. Dr Navratilova’s talk was a key part of an event organised by the French Institute for Eastern Archaeology (IFAO) in Cairo, with other speakers including the Czech Ambassador to Egypt, Ivan Jukl, and the Director of the IFAO, Professor Pierre Tallet.

The lecture, entitled “Footsteps, Stories and the Historian’s Responsibility”, drew on Dr Navratilova’s deep knowledge of Černý, who formed the subject of her 2023 biography A Citizen of Nowhere (Peeters Publishers for the Griffith Institute).
