The Courses

Harris Manchester accepts around two to three students reading Asian and Middle Eastern Studies per year.  This includes those reading for Arabic, Chinese, Egyptology and Sanskrit, among other courses.  Teaching for Asian and Middle Eastern Studies is provided centrally by the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Harris Manchester’s Senior Tutor, Professor Lesley Smith, acts as Director of Studies for our students to ensure that their academic requirements are looked after.  Student numbers at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies are small, and students generally get a lot of individual attention.  For those reading for the Classics & Asian and Middle Eastern Studies course we have an on-going arrangement with Jesus College to provide the classics tuition.  The Library provision of the Bodleian for these courses is excellent.  Unlike many other courses elsewhere, the focus is not simply on language learning, but also on the literature and cultures concerned.  Mature students generally do very well in these subjects, as they often have life experience of living and working in the requisite languages.  In addition, we have a tutor who can provide bespoke support with study skills, if needed.

Why Harris Manchester?

Harris Manchester College has long experience in catering for mature students, so if you will be aged 21 or over when you start your course, consider making us your first choice of college; that way you will have the best chance of coming to a college that is particularly welcoming to mature students and where you will be mixing with other students who have a wide range of life experience beyond school.
